A Frozen Dream

Unease pervades Connelly La Mar’s frozen dream visions of his adopted city, Bangkok, as if he is not quite at home in it. Tourist girls in ethnic dress, beauty queens for a day. Another tourist, an old man, clearly lost among the little brown people. A moulded plaster bear growling at its strange surroundings. A car with covered wheels going nowhere, its windshield wipers sticking up like exclamation marks over its bulging eyes. A white man’s head obliterated by a camera’s flash, as if by divine light that strikes him as he prepares to exit a train. La Mar’s images are mesmerising and distancing, and yet piercingly emotional and true, like the disoriented stuffed bear’s silent scream.

About artist:
Connelly La Mar is a practicing artist residing in Bangkok, Thailand. He continues to show his photographic work internationally, and work on collaborative sound projects with his British collaborator Laura Jane Cooper. His recent shows have included work in Viet Nam on a collaborative performance piece titled “Safety” at New Space Arts Foundation. Additionally, last year he had a solo show of his images at M Place Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.
His work usually focuses on subcultures, and consumption, as an idea. La Mar received his MFA from Yale University in Photography in 2005 and his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2002. Presently, he works in Bangkok as a Lecturer at the International Program in Design and Architecture at Chulalongkorn University, and is represented by Gallery Stock for photo-licensing in the United States.

นิมิตฝันค้าง : ความหวาดระแวงห่อคลุมนิมิตฝันค้างในภาพเมืองนอนที่ไม่ใช่บ้านเกิด – กรุงเทพ – ของ คอนเนลลี ลามาร์ ราวกับว่าเขายังไม่สนิทใจกับมันทีเดียว นักท่องเที่ยวสาวสามนางในชุดท้องถิ่นโบราณ – นางสงกรานต์จำเป็น; นี่ก็นักท่องเที่ยวอีกคน คุณลุงฝรั่งกางเกงขาสั้นยืนเหมือนแกะหลงฝูงท่ามกลางผู้คนตัวเล็กๆ สีน้ำตาล; หมีพลาสเตอร์คำรามใส่สิ่งแวดล้อมที่แปลกสีแปลกกลิ่น; รถเก๋งที่จอดคลุมล้ออยู่ ไม้ปัดน้ำฝนตั้งชี้ดังขีดอัศจรรย์เหนือลูกตาถลนหน้ารถ; หัวฝรั่งผู้ชายที่ระเบิดด้วยแสงสีขาวพร่าตาจากแฟลชกล้องถ่ายรูป ราวกับว่าโดนประกาศิตจากฟ้าในนาทีที่เขากำลังจะออกจากประตูรถไฟฟ้า ภาพถ่ายของคอนเนลลีทั้งมีมนต์สะกด และชวนให้ถอยห่าง แต่เปี่ยมด้วยสัจธรรมและความรู้สึก เฉกเช่นการร้องตะโกนไร้เสียงของหมีปูนปั้น
คอนเนลลี ลามาร์ ศิลปินภาพถ่ายชาวอเมริกัน จบปริญญาโทสาขาภาพถ่ายจากมหาวิทยาลัยเยล (Yale University) มีผลงานแสดงทั้งในไทยและต่างประเทศ ปัจจุบันเป็นอาจารย์สอนสาขาการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ หลักสูตรนานาชาติ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย
