This series of calm, black-and-white photographs features a young girl who might be the spirit of Yu Gwan-sun, a symbol of sacrifice for Korean independence. She appears in front of various landmarks dedicated to freedom and democracy. Her presence seems to ask questions about the current state of rights, independence, and democracy in South Korea today.
The declaration of martial law on the night of December 3, 2024, by former President Yoon Suk-yeol shocked the nation. It moved award-winning photographer Hakbong Kwon to rethink the “true foundation of the Republic of Korea.” By looking back at the history of the struggle for independence and those who died for it, he examines how democratic ideals are passed down and offers his own artistic interpretation through photography.
Layered Gazes by Hakbong Kwon is like looking at overlapping slices where the past and present alternate. The work is filled with many questions that remain silent. It is as if the girl, evoking Yu Gwan-sun, is questioning the people walking by. “How are freedom, independence, and democracy doing now? Do you still have the same spirit as those who lived through that time?” These questions hang in the air at a time when some are ready to do anything for their own gain, willing to destroy the very foundations of their nation, or even ignite a new world war.
Hakbong Kwon is a South Korean photographer who studied Visual Communication Design at Dankook University in Seoul and earned a master’s degree in Visual Arts from Chiang Mai University. He works in both documentary and fine art photography, as well as in the field of education and the production of photo books. His work has received many awards in France, the UK, and the USA. Currently, Hakbong Kwon lives in Lampang, Thailand, where he continues his photographic practice.

ภาพขาวดำสงบนิ่งของเด็กผู้หญิงที่อาจเป็นจิตวิญญาณของ ‘ยู กวานซุน’ สัญลักษณ์ของการเสียสละชีวิตเพื่อเอกราช
ของชาวเกาหลี กำลังลอยตัวอยู่หน้าสถานที่สำคัญต่าง ๆ ด้านสิทธิเสรีภาพ และความเป็นประชาธิปไตย การปรากฏตัวของเธอมานั้น ราวกับตั้งคำถามเกี่ยวกับความเป็นไปของ สิทธิเสรีภาพ การดำรงความเป็นเอกราช และประชาธิปไตยของเกาหลีใต้ในปัจจุบัน

และกระตุ้นให้ ฮักบง กวัน ช่างภาพมือรางวัลชาวเกาหลีใต้ ได้ทบทวนถึง “รากฐานที่แท้จริงของสาธารณรัฐเกาหลี” กระทั่งการมอง
ย้อนไปถึงประวัติศาสตร์การต่อสู้เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งเอกราช ผู้คนในอดีตที่ล้มตายไปเพื่อรากฐานนี้ การสืบทอดอุดมการณ์ทาง
ประชาธิปไตยของคนเกาหลีใต้ และการตีความใหม่ในเชิงศิลปะภาพถ่ายของเขา
งานภาพถ่ายชุด ‘สายตาที่ซ้อนทับ’ (Layered Gazes) ของ ฮักบง กวัน เป็นเหมือนการจ้องมองไปบนภาพที่ตัดสลับ อดีต-ปัจจุบัน ซ้อนทับกัน เต็มไปด้วยคำถามหลากหลายแต่กลับเงียบงัน ดูแล้วไม่ต่างกับ ยู กวานซุน ที่กำลังไถ่ถามผู้คนที่เดินผ่านไปมา “เสรีภาพ เอกราช ประชาธิปไตย ตอนนี้เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง? คุณยังมีอุดมการณ์เดียวกัน เหมือนกับวันที่พวกเขายังมีชีวิตอยู่หรือเปล่า?” คำถามเหล่านี้ลอยคว้างในอากาศ ในวันที่บางคนพร้อมที่จะลุกขึ้นมาทำอะไรก็ได้เพื่อผลประโยชน์ของตัวเอง พร้อมที่จะทำลาย
รากฐานสำคัญของประเทศ หรือกระทั่งก่อสงครามโลกครั้งใหม่ก็ตาม
ฮักบง กวัน ศิลปินภาพถ่ายชาวเกาหลีใต้ ศึกษาด้านการออกแบบภาพที่มหาวิทยาลัยดังกุกในกรุงโซล และสำเร็จ
ปริญญาโทสาขาทัศนศิลป์ คณะศิลปกรรมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ เขาทำงานทั้งด้านภาพถ่ายสารคดีและภาพถ่ายศิลปะ ด้านการศึกษา รวมทั้งการผลิตหนังสือภาพถ่าย ผลงานของเขาได้รับรางวัลมากมายทั้งที่ ฝรั่งเศส สหราชอาณาจักร และสหรัฐอเมริกา ปัจจุบัน ฮักบง กวัน ใช้ชีวิตอยู่ที่จังหวัดลำปาง และทำงานด้านการถ่ายภาพอย่างต่อเนื่อง
