BURNING LOVE

After the rich and diverse archeological rediscoveries of ‘Seeking Forgotten Masters of Thai Photography’ series of exhibitions (2011 – 2014), Kathmandu Photo Gallery looks to the future with ‘Project New Visions’, in search of exciting new photography in Thailand, starting with Ram Kanjanavanit’s Burning Love.
If Edvard Munch had directed a music video, it might look like this: as if ‘The Kiss’, ‘The Vampire’ and ‘The Scream’ have possessed a set of acid-corroded Thonglor wedding photos. Instincts long suppressed by the artificial sweetness and perfect bliss of the world’s romantic conventions bleed through as from an unstoppable wound. Ram’s Romantic anti-romantic ‘Burning Love’ series is seared with a great yearning to break free of Designer Romance and all the lifestyle choices that it implies. For most of us, unenlightened souls embroiled in worldly expectations, such a longing, such a scream, is itself authenticity enough.
Project New Visions curator Manit Sriwanichpoom: “His compositions are uncomplicated but full of power. By blending painting and photography techniques, Ram creates another dimension of mystery and horror. The pictures appear to bleed with colour; what an intense and strange vision of love.”
Ram Kanjanavanit (b.1988 in Bangkok) worked as graduation & wedding photographer and MV director after graduating in communication arts from Bangkok University in 2011 before going to New York to study photography at the International Center of Photography, graduating in General Studies in Photography in 2015. After a further year as teaching assistant in history of photography at the ICP, he has returned to Bangkok for this, his first solo show. Ram’s previous exhibition was MANO (มโน) group exhibition at the RMA Institute in 2013. He has also covered 3 seasons of New York Fashion Week for Harper’s Bazaar Thailand.

หลังความสำเร็จของโครงการย้อนอดีต ‘ค้นหาครูภาพถ่ายไทย’ (Seeking Forgotten Masters of Thai Photography) ปี 2554 – 2557 คราวนี้ คัดมันดู โฟโต้ แกลเลอรี่ ส่องอนาคตด้วยโครงการใหม่ ‘จับตา’ หรือ Project New Visions เพื่อค้นหาช่างภาพและศิลปินภาพถ่ายรุ่นใหม่ ผู้มีมุมมองและการแสดงออกใหม่ๆ อันสะท้อนยุคสมัยของตนเอง
หาก เอ็ดวาร์ด มุงค์ ได้กำกับ M.V.เพลงรัก มันอาจออกมาหน้าตาแบบนี้ ราวกับว่า ‘เดอะคิส’, ‘เดอะแวมไพร์’ และ ‘เดอะสกรีม’ เข้าสิงภาพถ่ายเว็ดดิ้งสตูดิโอแถวทองหล่อที่ตกลงไปในอ่างน้ำกรด สัญชาตญาณที่ธรรมเนียมโรแมนติก ของโลกนี้ พร้อมความซึ้งเก๊สุขสมบูรณ์ของมัน เก็บกดทับมาแสนนาน ซึมล้นราวเลือดที่ไหลออกมาจากแผลที่ไม่มีวันหาย
‘รักเอย’ ภาพถ่ายชุดโรแมนติก – ต่อต้านโรแมนติกของ ราม กาญจนะวณิชย์ แสบซ่านด้วยแรงโหยหาถึงเสรีภาพจากความรักแบบ ส.ค.ส. และวิถีชีวิตที่มันหมายถึง สำหรับสัตว์โลกธรรมดาอย่างเรา ผู้จมปลักอยู่ในความคาดหมายของโลกา ความโหยหานี้คือความจริงใจและสัจธรรม ที่เพียงพอของแท้แน่แล้ว
มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ ภัณฑารักษ์โครงการ ‘จับตา’ : “ภาพถ่ายของรามมีการจัดภาพ (Composition) ที่ไม่ซับซ้อน แต่เต็มไปด้วยพลัง การใช้เทคนิคสีภาพเขียนมาผสมผสานกับภาพถ่ายทำให้เกิดมิติที่น่าสนใจ เช่นปิดหมดเหลือเห็นแค่ตา ลักษณะการไหลเยิ้มของสีดูน่ากลัว เหมือนเลือด เห็นบอกว่าเป็นเรื่องความรัก ความรักของเขาค่อนข้างจะเต็มไปด้วยความเข้มข้น”
ราม กาญจนะวณิชย์ (เกิด 2531, กรุงเทพ) เริ่มต้นอาชีพด้วยการถ่ายภาพงานรับปริญญา งานแต่งงาน และกำกับ MV หลังจากจบนิเทศศาสตร์ ม.กรุงเทพ ในปี 2554 ก่อนจะเดินทางไปเรียนต่อที่สถาบันภาพถ่ายนานาชาติ International Centre of Photography (ICP) นิวยอร์ค ปี 2558 และเมื่อเรียนจบ เขาทำงานเป็นผู้ช่วยอาจารย์วิชาประวัติศาสตร์การถ่ายภาพ ณ สถาบันดังกล่าว รามเคยร่วมแสดงนิทรรศการกลุ่ม ‘มโน’ ณ อาร์เอ็มเอ ปี 2556 เขายังถ่ายภาพนิวยอร์คแฟชั่นวีคถึง 3 ซีซั่นให้แก่นิตยสาร Harper’s Bazaar ประเทศไทย
