Does \u2018Thainess\u2019 exist in the digital age? If it does, what does that look like?<\/p>\n

Pioneering Thai street photographer Chatchai Boonyaprapatsara<\/strong> has observed this phenomenon in over ten years\u2019 accumulated work.<\/p>\n

These colourful photographs of polar opposites: the old Thainess and the new western influence, that clash together loudly and vividly, produce an awkward chemical reaction, like mixing oil and water. A Thai traditional dancer with a golden deer head gliding down the escalator in a grand shopping mall invokes a modern-day mural painted by digital camera, thereby causing the viewer to become momentarily inter-dimensionally confused. A zombie Thai dancer scaring a white woman tourist to nervous laughter. Two weary, clumsy young men tie down a mannequin in mythological costume to a trolley, to be packed up and stored away after a Thai cultural event.<\/p>\n

Curator Manit Sriwanichpoom<\/strong>: \u201cIn just a few decades globalization has provoked a shockingly reactionary tide of nationalism. The dream has ended, of one day seeing human co-existence with equal rights, without prejudice, without division into us and them. Now we have Brexit in England, the building of a high wall on the US-Mexico border, and here in Thailand the fad to dress up in fashions from the days of absolute monarchy. This series by Chatchai Boonyaprapatsara is therefore an important, essential, cultural and social record.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chatchai Boonyaprapatsara<\/strong> (b 1966) graduated in photography from the Bangkok Technical College and The Corcoran School of Arts, Washington D.C. He has worked with top advertising agencies for over 14 years. Chatchai has had many solo and group exhibitions. He is one of the pioneering generation of Thai street photography and a founder of the prominent website Street Photo Thailand, a popular platform for the new generation of Thai photographers.<\/p>\n
