If any photographer could claim to capture souls, Eiffel Chong<\/strong> is the man. He doesn\u2019t resort to trick the eye by having someone run pass the camera to create a moving blur. Quite the reverse; everything he photographs, foreground and background, appears sharp.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2018A Trace of Mortality\u2019<\/em> is the first solo exhibition in Thailand by Malaysia\u2019s leading contemporary photographer Eiffel Chong. Consisting of 15 pieces from 15 years of creative production, between 2001 & 2014, the show is a vivid taste of the artist\u2019s disquieting ability to fill the world with invisible watching eyes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the black & white series, \u2018Haunted School\u2019 (2001 -2002), an old tree like a giant hand seems to be holding the world\u2014a school building at night, empty of students, more like a haunted house than a school.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the bright clean series, \u2018Institutional Care\u2019 (2005 \u2013 2007), a newborn child lies by itself in a basin under ultraviolet lamplight. His simple angle & composition suggest to us that the baby is being watched by someone or something from a distance. In another photo, a fresh new bouquet of flowers has been left on the floor outside a hospital room. Whose flowers are they? In \u2018Seascape\u2019 (2014), at the Cambodian seaside, a giant painted plaster crab with the legend \u201cWelcome to Kep\u201d seems to clack its claws in homage to the noon sun; yet the sea, normally full of waves, is smooth and unmoving.<\/p>\n

Eiffel Chong<\/strong>: \u201cI\u2019m interested in how photography can translate a particular time and space, memories and thoughts into something permanent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Curator Manit Sriwanichpoom<\/strong>: \u201cEiffel Chong\u2019s extreme long exposures bring impressive results. It is as if the artist is using his camera to absorb everything before it, including things normally invisible to the human eye\u2014things which become more visible to us the longer we gaze as his images.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Eiffel Chong, 40, graduated with an MA in International Contemporary Art and Design Practice from the University of East London and a BA (Hons) in Photography from London College of Printing. Besides his production of photographic work, Chong is highly engaged with the Malaysian photographic community; taking on the role of mentor for the Goethe Institut Malaysia\/Nikon Shooting Stars programme and Exposure+ Workshop. In addition, he has been appointed to the panel of judges for the Kuala Lumpur Photography Awards 2016 & 2013 and 2017 Annual Nikon Photo Awards, Malaysia.<\/p>\n
