Surprisingly, they were not taken in Pattaya or soi Nana but in 1980 Singapore, on once legendary Bugis Street. Soon after these photos were taken, they became historical relics as the street was razed and \u2018redeveloped\u2019 into a sanitized shopping and nightlife district, thereby obliterating this exotic sailors\u2019 sex paradise from the memory of Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wide-eyed, newly arrived in Asia, the then 23 year old photographer from Paris felt on Bugis Street like a child lost in a cloud of vivid butterflies. \u00a0He befriended them and took their pictures. They posed\u2014like Hollywood stars; they manifested their hopeless fantasies of being adored and admired. Like him, like all of us, they were human, of flesh, blood and desire; not just curiosity objects of sexual commerce from exotic Southeast Asia, the stereotype imposed upon them by the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kathmandu Photo Gallery is proud to present <em>\u2018Bugis Street\u2019<\/em>, a nostalgic flashback by French photographer Alain Soldeville. Working as a photojournalist since 1985, his work has been widely published in leading publications such as New York Times, Stern, Newsweek, National Geographic and Geo. Since 1999 he has turned increasingly to contemporary art photography, \u2018The eloquent body\u2019 being his best-known work. He lives in Paris and exhibits his work both in Europe and in
