A mini-retrospective of Thailand\u2019s forgotten photography master<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Liang Ewe<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n 1 October \u2013 27 November 2011<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Liang Ewe<\/em> (Chinese for \u2018Good Friend\u2019), Phuket\u2019s venerable old photography studio, was opened for business in 1933 by Aree Khorchareon (Chinese name \u2018Khor Eng Lee\u2019, 1911 \u2013 1992)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Though entirely self-taught, his great talent both in the direction of his sitters and in technical proficiency \u2013 the selection of lenses, camera angles and beautiful lighting, kept his studio the favourite of the island\u2019s elite until his death in 1992. The vast treasure trove of glass and acetate film negatives that he left behind is an invaluable social and cultural heritage: portraits of Phuket inhabitants spanning the pivotal transition in Phuket\u2019s history, from the end of the tin-mining gold rush to the early beginnings of the tourist boom.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Kathmandu Photo Gallery is proud to present the cream of \u2018Liang Ewe\u2019<\/em>, printed from his original glass negatives, all previously unexhibited, to honour this master photographer as part of our \u2018Seeking Forgotten Thai Photographers\u2019 <\/em>project
