Their flexible and unusual way of squatting, standing and walking seems to come from complex etiquettes of an ancient civilisation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Uchimata \u2014 turning the feet inside \u2014 was praised both for showing na\u00efve innocence of childish postures \u2014 celebrated in the traditional nihonga painting \u2014 or for showing sophisticated seduction, like in oiran dochu, the courtesans parade of the Yoshiwara quarter in old Edo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We see these postures \u2014 bodily and culturally fitted for women walking in kimono \u2014 still used by garish young fashion victims in miniskirts of the post-modern bladerunnesque Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a country were everything goes so fast, with fashions changing every three months, people&#8217;s physical attitudes have remained virtually unchanged since centuries showing a &#8220;cultural permanence&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All these girls are executing a slow fleeting ballet. Their are quietly standing in a relaxed way but, at the same time, their poses are dynamic. There is an inside tension and we feel they are about to move around, but in their own sweet Japanese way\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Claude Est\u00e8be<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>**En dedans : French word used in classical ballet to refer to movement within a circle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;<\/em><em>And what makes him wonders, and which makes us wonder with him, is how much these legs can express : a culture, a society, an ancestral tradition marching against modern times. Claude Est\u00e8be is an archeologist of contemporary life&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>S\u00e9bastien de Diesbach <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Claude Est\u00e8be<\/strong> is a French photographer. His work questions the &#8220;cultural body&#8221; and the youth\u2019s subculture : dancers, cosplayers, street fashion and icons of everyday mythology\u2026<\/p>\n<p>He started the \u201cLegs\u201d serie at Villa Kujoyama, a french artistic residence in Kyoto.
